so when we went to New Orleans for our honeymoon, but had to evacuate because of Hurricane Isidore, we went to Toronto for a couple days. this year, Toronto was our first choice for the anniversary.
being a Monty Python fan, i was very excited that Spamalot was coming to Toronto. there's a traveling show coming to Buffalo this year, but those little week-long stints are never as good as something that's settled in for a few months in a bigger city. so we went up Saturday for a matinee on its last weekend in TO.
after the typical traffic, we got there with really good timing. found a fantastic parking spot in the craziest parking ramp ever at the Eaton Centre. we didn't know where exactly we had ended up, but once we found our way to the mall and then out the nearest door, we were almost directly across the street from the theatre itself. sweet.
i had picked out our tickets on the balcony because all the good floor seats had already been taken. i think they were really good. i have yet to find a theatre, though, where you don't feel a little cramped in, and then i consider how bad i feel for poor giant john.
the show was great. included most of my favorite parts from the movie without some of the more boring parts. there were a few choice moments not included, but i guess you have to make due. stuff they added was generally silly and it really went in a different direction at the end, but that's all right, as the movie ending is really dumb. it was a surprisingly short show. each act was probably only an hour long, making the whole show actually shorter than the movie. over all, very enjoyable.
we were back at the mall at 4:30 and had to decide on eating then and checking out the mall or reversing that order, but we opted to eat first so we could get a seat at the place i wanted to eat before it got crowded. so we went to the City Grill, and had a really great dinner. everything was awesome and you gotta appreciate a waitress who comes over to fill up your glass of water unsolicited when it's only half empty. we tipped well.
we noticed out the windows that there was an old church and some other historical looking building with a fountain that ended abruptly right next to the mall so we went out to check them out. we found a giant labyrinth so we walked through that until we got to the middle and then ran for the mall because it was cold.
wandered around the mall, but only picked up a couple things in old navy. hit the typical traffic trying to get out of the city, but you can always make it up on the QEW, where i swear i've never seen a cop pull anyone over for speeding in all my many years of Canadian travel.
all in all, a very satisfying little anniversary trip.
