so my dad calls up last night to tell me that someone drowned in the Canal in front of their house.  i thought he was actually calling to tell me because it might be somone i knew, but no.  just the only excitement in Gastown since Canal Fest ended.  so i watched the news story about it today and they were two 20-something brothers who were supposedly training for a triathalon.  both went down, but only one was successfully rescued.

so i made a comment about people being idiots to john last night.  then i remembered this time that sean, my ex-boyfriend, and i were swimming in the Canal and he decided it wasn't that far across and chose to swim to the other side and back.  he made it to the other side and then started to slow down coming back.  i think i may have gone out to him a little with a life jacket to lean on or something at some point.  when he got back to our side, he promptly threw up from the exertion.  this is someone, by the way, who now has a PhD. and does research in Europe.  and me, with a Masters now, who let him do it.  i can't even say we were all that young.  i'd assume at least 20 by that point.  but boy, what a couple of morons we were.

Okay I don't get it. It's just the canal. There's barely a current. You get tired and you float awhile and rest. Of course, I've never had the urge to swim across it.
