so i'm watching the beginning of the Edmonton/Carolina game, oohing and ahing over Don Cherry's latest ridiculous suit, when my phone rings. it's my next door neighbor and she sounds kind of funny. then tells me that someone hit their house and did we want to come out there. i was already in a nightgown so threw some clothes back on and met everyone out there. i thought she meant that a car had hit them right then, but that was not exactly what happened.
bear with me. this is hard to explain. they were just leaving for a walk and noticed some marks in the grass that appeared to be tire tracks. they lead right up to the house and there's some dents in their siding. doesn't look too bad until you go in and see the damage from inside. the wall is pushed in and the carpet pushed up and it's bad. real bad.
but it's very weird. it's the one place on their lawn where they could have gone straight in and hit the house without hitting any trees. and there's only one set of tire marks that go straight back so they made a straight shot and then somehow managed to pull straight back out exactly the same way. no paint chips or anything. so broken glass.
john then remembers that we both heard some sort of thud at about 5 a.m. we checked the house at the time. mike was in his room with the tv on, the dogs (we had mom's, too) weren't concerned, and nothing seemed out of place downstairs. so went back to bed and forgot about it. we're thinking that might have been when it happened.
the neighbors themselves didn't hear anything. that's a room they never use and no one's bedroom is above that. furthermore, they have a fan and a baby monitor going. and like i said, i heard a thud, but it wasn't a loud crash at all. they must have slowed down a little by the time they hit the house, but still hit it hard enough to do that kind of damage. the cops that came to check it out figure it was probably a truck or SUV based on how high some of the dents went.
i really can't explain how weird this all is. honestly, and this is terrible, i was just so glad it wasn't us. that's about the last thing we need right now.

afterwards, we finished watching the hockey game, which was awesome!!! going to game 7 and it will absolutely rule if edmonton wins it. their audience was so enthusiastic and the entire arena sang along with the canadian national anthem. the guy singing even stopped singing into his mike and held it up for the audience to finish. you'd never see that in the states. but hey, even if they don't win, they sure put up a good fight.

got dad some shoes that have bottle openers built into them on the bottom. kevin had a pair at our birthday party and dad loved them. dad isn't easy to shop for. he never wants anything and when he does, it's some ridiculously expensive electronics item. so when you find something he wants, you gotta jump on it. and when you do get him something he sorta wants, he always manages to find something wrong with it or is less than excited. this was a coup. he loved them. we gave him a bottle of Magic Hat along with them and he was very excited to use them. AND he was like a little kid coming up with all the people that would be totally jealous of his new toy. success!
the sad part is, that took 30 years to accomplish and it'll likely never happen again so i need to savor this victory.
