i'm kinda lazy, but my boy, john, is a huge procrastinator. therefore, this whole PhD thing he's been working on for a couple of years has been a major thorn in his side. well, he's nearly done with his coursework, which means he now has to prove that he's actually learned something before they let him waste all that time on a dissertation.
so he's taking his comps (i.e. comprehensive exam) this weekend on everything from his masters to his current program. at ten this morning, he picked up sex questions. he has to answer either three or four (i'm not entirely sure which) of them by 4:00 on monday.
answering them, by the way, involves a full paper for each question with multiple references. john does not write short papers. he's almost always way over the limit and despite his use of the word "thing" to describe literally everything when he's speaking, he busts out the SAT words like crazy when writing. he tends to use an excessive amount of quotes and spends paragraphs re-stating something that could have been done in one sentence. as a person with a math degree, i tend to be more succinct and always had trouble meeting the page limit. we are good editors for each other, i suppose.
in any case, that's a lot of work in a very short time. he's been prepping himself for weeks by going through old readings, etc. on the topics he's most strong in. but now the real work has begun, and i need to just get the hell out of the way. i've got a board meeting tonight, but other than that, i predict me sitting in a movie theater by myself a lot this weekend. hmmm, i need to find new friends that won't move away.
