Got into a car accident today. Kind of sucked. Right off the bat, though, let me tell you that I'm perfectly fine.
Our local highway is a three lane for part of the way, but they have a tendency to not do as good a job with plowing the left lane as they do with the two right lanes. That being said, it still looked driveable to me and I know that the hard part is just switching lanes, because of the slush that builds up between tire lines, so I was indeed trying to be very careful. But I just never gained control of that lane so my main objective at that point was to not go uncontrollably back into traffic and hit another car.
In retrospect, I actually think I did an excellent job of attempting to control an uncontrollable situation. I'm proud of my winter driving skills and I do think I did everything just right that I should have. However, I still moved, albeit slowly, head on into the guardrail and then bounced off so I was backwards, but still on the shoulder for the most part. No airbags deployed. I was barely even jolted. I have to say props to modern cars for doing such a nice job of taking the impact.
I'm a little annoyed that no one who saw it happen stopped at all. However, after I called the police and got that taken care of, a guy in a truck with Virgina plates did stop and blocked the lane so no one would come close to me, and then helped me move the parts of my car that had fallen off so I wouldn't run them over and could pull over a little better.
Oh, yes, things fell off my car. In fact, the entire front section of the outer body fell right off, bumper and license plate going with it. It was very sad to see parts of her just lying there in the snow. But I didn't really get upset at all until I attempted to call John and he had his cell phone off. Grrrr.
So I called work, called John's office to leave him a message, called my dad who wisely advised that he would call my mom later to fill her in so she wouldn't freak out while she was attempting to drive around today, and after the cop got there but while waiting for the tow truck, I called the insurance company.
The cop, by the way, was kind of a dick. Granted, he probably had a report that said I was okay from when I called it in, but he didn't even ask if I was fine. He seemed annoyed and disgruntled the entire time, as if I was some crazy woman driver who doesn't know how to drive in the snow. I should have lied when he asked me what lane I was in because when I told him it was the left lane, he looked satisfied that he was right in his unspoken assessment of me. Listen, I read the Amherst police blotter in the Bee. You don't have anything better to do, I'm sure.
Anyway. The insurance person was just lovely and seemed confused that I was joking about everything, but that's how I deal. It is what it is so I might as well make light of the situation.
The tow truck driver was also very nice and, getting that I was still generally in good humor, joked that I should blame it on having a Toyota with a sticky accelerator.
And the guy at Carubba Collision was above and beyond nice. He informed me that Amica Insurance is far and away the best car insurance to have because they're great to deal with and they always use brand name parts, so yay for me on that one, I guess.
Though I suppose I should call Amica back and find out if they cover having to buy a new car seat. It's probably as perfectly fine as I am, but any car accident is supposed to be grounds for getting a new one.
So one of the Carubba guys drove me home and I guess I'm just having a mental health day, but I suppose I should consider calling Enterprise to book me a car for Monday.
I wanted a day off today, but not like this. Boo.

Date: 2010-02-26 11:26 pm (UTC)From:Too bad about the police officer's bad attitude. My husband would never treat you like that! (on the other hand, there are trooopers that would, but we don't like that kind... ) :)
FYI, if you really felt that put-off by him, you should complain. His supervisors won't know what he is like, unless the public lets them know.

Date: 2010-02-27 02:22 am (UTC)From:I've never really been in an accident before, but he didn't particularly ask much about what happened, now that I think about it. I mean, yes, in the weather we were having, it's a pretty safe assumption as to what went down, but you'd think you'd have a procedure of specific things you should be asking in an accident situation. Can't wait to read the report.

Date: 2010-02-27 01:02 pm (UTC)From:With Jason's accident last spring, the insurance (not Amica, but the policies might be similar) had 500 dollars toward replacing personal property in the accident, which covered not only the car seat but his glasses and cell phone, actually... so nice and flexible, and if the car place guy says your insurance is particularly good then they must be nice about that sort of thing as well!
