so my well-deserved raise has been put off and put off and the last excuse i got was that we were waiting for this big grant to come in from a local foundation that i would be playing yet another integral role in. in an off-handed way, the boss informed me that the grant is coming in come february. so i pleasantly asked if i'd then get my raise. she totally hedged it.

john called me shortly thereafter to let me know i got a call regarding a resume i just faxed in over the weekend and they want to do an interview on friday. it's for a job that would pay $6,000-8,000 more than what i make now. there's another job i'm not particularly qualified for, but what the hell. i'll apply to that one, too, as soon as i get my letters of reference.

there are people i'll be screwing over and i'm particularly sorry if i wind up shafting my intern, but for once in my life, i need to get past these feelings of obligation and move on. i can't tell you how many times i've done that and just been miserable.

The people you actually like should be happy for you if you get a better job.

No, YOU would not be screwing them - your shitty employers are screwing them by not paying you what you're worth. What you may be responsible for (it sounds like) is spoiling people by doing a good job.
