I just started reading "Adam Bede" by George Eliot, who was apparently actually a woman writing under a pen name. Anyway. I'm only about four chapters in, but I kind of appreciate it so far because its focus is working class as opposed to the standard English romances where no one ever seemed to have or need a job.
My point in mentioning it, though, was this great line in reference to Adam's mother "who had no joy but in the happiness of the loved ones whom she contributed to make uncomfortable."
I love it.
