i went to a high school today for a CSE (Committee on Special Education) meeting on a club member i work with quite a bit. the girl is actually very smart. her scores were quite good for reading and math. her writing could use some work, which doesn't surprise me at all. but the biggest problem she has is making it through a substantial amount of time without getting suspended. she's been out of school more than she's been in it, i think, this year. and this isn't anything new for her or for her siblings at this school. so why in the world did it take me to suggest that she see the school counselor? they seemed shocked, but pleasantly so, like i had just made the most brilliant suggestion ever. perhaps it's because i work in that field, but it seems to me that it might be obvious to have this girl, who isn't passing merely because she has some workable behavior issues, see the school counselor. uh, duh.
