So I'm down with the energy saving CFL bulbs, but here's the problem we are now running into.  That weird shape doesn't work in all my lamps.  Lamps that have those shades that clip directly onto the bulb are not CFL friendly.  Neither are smaller ceiling globes.

And yes, they do make some that have the little CFL twist built into a normal looking bulb, but the wattage on those is too low.  The most you can get with one of those is the equivalent of 45 watts, not sufficient lighting for me in most of the places we'd need them.

I'm trying to be environmentally friendly, but they need to work with me on this one.

really, they are only 45 watts?? I knew they existed, but hadn't checked them out yet (my enclosed fixtures still have old lightbulbs since the spirals shouldn't go in them). Do they not understand that we need wattage in our homes??? I can't even use a 60 watt CFL in my living room, because it is just not enough light. I put in a 75 watt, instead.

John won't even let me switch the reading lamp next to the bed, because he gets so annoyed with the CFL light quality.

My theory on being greener-- and really, I'm a fairly environmental person, I was just brought up that way, with a dad who worked for the Department of Environmental Protection and a mom who comes from a family of foresters-- is you do what you can, any little bit you can, and maybe if that doesn't mean you're PERFECTLY green, the steps you DO take make a difference. Anyway, it's not good to make ALL your lightbulbs CFL. For lights that aren't on for long periods of time-- lights you're just flicking on or off while passing through, like hallways and bathrooms-- it's actually greener, cheaper, and generally more convenient to use plain old halogens, since CFLs use most of their energy just turning on. So... maybe you should STRATEGICALLY PLACE the non-CFL-friendly lamps...

Yeah, 45 watts is like a fridge bulb.
