John's laptop crashed yesterday.  Thought I had it fixed, but then later in the day it did something else weird.  We do have a desktop that works just fine.  Here's the problem, though.  I use the laptop on an almost daily basis to get a little work done here and there while Nora plays in the family room.  I really depend on that.  So now we're thinking of how we can set up my desktop in the already overcrowded family room...

Blue screen issues... always a good time. There was something about a virus protection file being to blame (only the first time after which we removed it), it mentioned something about updating BIOS, and it said it was clearing the memory/caches. I can't remember off the top of my head

I checked and there is definitely space left on the hard drive and the cache gets cleaned out regularly, but it did crash again this morning when I tried the internet.

well, Bluescreens usually start with a 0x-------- error code, with up to four additional codes in parentheses; that helps define the actual cause of the error.

Otherwise, write down the exact error message and post it here or search for fragments of it in your favorite search engine, you can usually find answers or other examples.

All else fails, back up your personal data and reformat/reinstall Windows.

Ok here are the error messages I have been getting. I was trying to run a system scan, but it didn't work and now I am having trouble boot up in safe mode without hitting a blue screen. I was considering trying to do a system restore, but can't seem to get through. Sorry, I am quite inept at this kind of issue because I learned to troubleshoot on a pre 0SX mac.

There was another I didn't write down but it was approximately:
0x00000001 (0xFFFFFFFF, 0x00000002, OxFFFFFFFF something

I also was occasionally getting the error message that my sytem recovered from a major system error.

Reverting to the last good configuration didn't help. Several minutes later the blue screen returned. Found the following online.

Several years ago I installed a new memory chip, I still have the old one so I can try to see if it helps if I replace either of the existing ones.

I really don't follow this one.

This might be too simple a fix, but when I thought my laptop crapped out on me and was fighting with office max over my warranty paperwork, someone else just told me to take out the battery for 15 minutes and put it back in.

But I know nothing about computers and this sounds more ominous.

Somewhat Resolved

Replacing the new RAM chip with the older slower one, seemed to do the trick. It has't crashed since. Hopefully, it will stay that way.
