I had believed that after the baby was born, I wouldn't have time to watch TV. However, since I spend a lot of time housebound while Nora sleeps, I actually have a lot of time to watch TV. So we are exploring the slim pickings of summer TV.
There's always the weird reality shows that they save for summer because no one, not even me, would watch them during the regular season when there are good things like "Heroes" on. I do love the trash, though. Things like "Pirate Master" and "Age of Love" are two of our favorites this year. They aren't quite filling the void that Rock Star seems to have left in my summer viewing, but they are amusing in their own right. John is also watching some Australian Treasure Island type reality show on BBC On Demand. And "Who Wants to Be a Superhero?" hasn't even started yet so it can only get better.
I need to give a special reality shout out to A & E's "Confessions of a Matchmaker" which was actually done in Buffalo. I checked it out to see if I recognized anyone (not yet) or any locations (constantly) and love it anyway. I don't get where this woman got that thick accent, but her personality kills me with these clients of hers.
Then there's the normal TV shows that the cable channels put out in the summer. I've been watching "The Dead Zone" on USA for years since it started shortly after I read the book and I'm pretty well sucked in. I like some of the twists the show put on the basic plot line and I totally dig this non-geeky, non-scrawny Anthony Michael Hall. John likes "Eureka" on SciFi. I enjoy "Psych" on USA. And I think my new favorite is "Greek" on ABC Family. We tried out "Burn Notice," also on USA, but there was just not enough Bruce Campbell.
And of course VH1 is a category in its own right. While the Scott Baio show hasn't interested me too much just yet, there's a new season of Hulk Hogan's show, which generally cracks me up. Oh, and I'm already completely hooked on "Rock of Love" with the lead singer from Poison. If you thought the Flavor of Love girls were crazy, you should see the trash that made it onto this show. Let's just say there's an awful lot of silicone.
But of course my favorite VH1 show this summer is the World Series of Pop Culture. I fricking love that show. I get excited when there's a category that I know every answer to, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I know that Ferris Bueller missed 9 days of school even when the players did not. I get very emotionally invested in this and start yelling at the players when they don't know something that seems so blatantly obvious to me. The one that pissed me off the most was the girl that went up to do a category on 80s songs and the excuse she kept using for not knowing any of the answers was how young/nonexistent she was when those songs came out. 80s music is like the cornerstone of pop culture. How do you claim to be competitive in the pop culture arena without a basic knowledge of 80s music? Needless to say, that team lost in the first round. I really enjoyed the category on songs from 2006 that neither team knew any of the answers to. They actually had to do a tie breaker on a score of zero to zero. God, I love that show. Ooh, and I need to go watch the next round.

World Series of Pop Culture
Date: 2007-07-20 02:11 am (UTC)From:I have to say, we're really pulling for the Kansas City team, Wocka Wocka. But they're in some pretty intense competition. I was kind of disappointed that Twisted Misters made it to the finals. Something about them just rubs me wrong. Too cocky, I guess. Dunno.
We were cracking up at the 0-0 tie breaker. How about all the double tie breakers this time around?!? Wow.
Okay, it's nice to rant to someone who understands. And yes, we knew Ferris missed 9 days. And I knew the Melrose Place cast as well ;-)
"On that note, we cue the music." (Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back)
Off to watch Pop Culture in a few!
spoiler alert!

Date: 2007-07-20 01:07 pm (UTC)From:With this show, it's always the luck of the draw as to what questions you get. I swept the Simpsons category, but I would have gotten nowhere with the tie breaker for that one.
