Long story short.  I stayed up Saturday night watching SNL and reading my last Jane magazine so I didn't go to bed until 1 am Sunday.  Felt fine.  Woke up at 3 am feeling like maybe I was having Braxton Hicks.  So I wandered around the house and had some water, but they only got worse.  Opted to wake John up to help me time them and decided to call the midwives as they were already five minutes apart.  Talked to her a few times over the next couple of hours.  Tried to take a bath, but that wasn't helping as our tub isn't very deep and I just got cold.  The dog knew I was in distress and stuck right by my side the whole time.

Finally went to the hospital around 6ish and after a rather hellish ride with contractions that were two minutes apart, arrived around 6:30.  They don't have their valet parking at 6 am on Sunday mornings so John parked in the dropoff area and got me to the labor and delivery floor where they had me fill out paperwork while he went back to move the car.  It was nearly impossible for me to change or do anything as the contractions were so close.  The midwife arrived and informed me that I was already 7 cm dilated.

I instantly requested the epidural.  Best decision ever.  They were just too close and too intense for me to handle.

Started pushing around 10:30 after a brief mellow epidural induced period of time during which we watched Splash.  Pushing was really awful for me, particularly the longer it took.  I really had no energy left so I may have inadvertently dragged it out a bit longer than it needed to be, but the baby finally arrived at 12:48 in the aftertnoon.

And it's a girl.  Eleanor Rebekah was 6 lbs 7.5 oz and 19 1/4 inches long.  She also has gigantic feet.

I was pretty zonked after that and still had to endure the whole passing the placenta and getting some internal stitches and getting checked out for tears and abrasions, which was also really not fun.  But then it was nice to just relax.

John was really awesome, by the way, and I think is pretty amazed at the miracle of life.

Nursing was difficult the first day as she was sleepy.  She's now a champ, but I'm getting very sore from it and have some concerns about that.  We have an appointment for Thursday morning with one of the lactation consultants at the pediatrician's office.  She's clearly getting what she needs from all the poop she's exploding, but I'm wondering if something isn't quite right or if my poor boobs just haven't been able to recover from that first day when things were definitely not going quite right.  I guess we'll see as the saga continues...

Once again, congratulations!! We are so happy for you. John-Paul says that he LOVES the name and especially loves how you have chosen to spell her middle name.

Amber is right, nursing will get easier. If it doesn't, it sounds like you have good resources to utilize. I can't believe the peds office has a lactation consultant! How perfect and practical.

Oh... letting her nurse for Loooooong periods of time (dozing and then eating, then dozing, etc) will definitely cause sore nipples. Jacob tried to do that a couple times. Those were the only times that he he took a pacifier. For whatever reason he needed to suck those days.

At last, my demands for pictures have been met!
I adore her fuzziness and cannot wait to squeeze her.
