Okay. So I'm trying to look at myself in the mirror and decide if my belly is hanging any lower. I mean, there's only so much that it can fight gravity, but that doesn't tell me if anything is dropping in there.
But then I remembered that when I was at last week's appointment, the midwife had done a quick internal exam and told me the baby was at a station of -2. She sort of explained what that meant, but I didn't quite follow, and then I forgot to look into it. So I just checked it out.
The station has to do with how low in the pelvis the baby's head is. There's a spot in the pelvis that is considered to be a station of zero, somehow measured by the ischial spines, which means nothing to me. 1cm above that is -1, 2cm is -2, and so on. 1cm below is +1, etc. So all this would give me an idea of where this kid actually is, but since they don't bother with the internal exams, I really have no idea.
But she seemed to be excited that it was at -2 last week and who knows where it is now. I have heard that when it really drops it'll feel like there's a bowling ball between my legs or like the baby is just going to fall out any minute (wouldn't that be a nice way to go about it), and we're clearly not at that point yet.

Date: 2007-03-23 11:53 pm (UTC)From:My midwife never did weekly checks, either. It's really quite silly to do it, unless you are simply curious. Besides the fact that it can be uncomfortable and cause icky painful cramping. Oh, and that made me remember that the midwife that delivered Jacob had the SHORTEST fingers ever. It made checks during labor quite, quite uncomfortable.
Don't get too into the "dropping" think. I dropped at least a month before Jacob was born. :)
