we weren't really going to do anything for valentine's day. it's not really that much of a big deal for us anymore. plus i had to work all day and john had class after he got out of work. so whatever. i just eventually wanted some sponge candy from Watson's, which i did receive on thursday.

but john also decided that we were going on a secret trip today. i've been rather reluctant, to be honest. i'm terribly overwhelmed with work for my class and had a minor level nervous breakdown the other day while drowning in articles and job stress from our damn peace circles. but he said the trip would only be for a couple hours.

this was a bit of an exaggeration as he did let me know last night that we'd be going to rochester. that's a couple hours of driving without the actual mystery activity. plus we have mom's dog this weekend and he's not so good by himself at my house and i wasn't sure how much mike would be home to tend to him.

so i was being kinda cranky about this trip. i had a couple reasons to believe i was being dragged out to some swing dance lessons, which wasn't top on my list of reasons to go to rochester, but john seemed excited about it.

i knew we were meeting deanne and that kelly and james weren't going to be able to be there. but john had implied that we were meeting "people," so i assumed deanne's boyfriend was the other person.

now this is where it gets amusing. we go past Wegmans headquarters and down some mostly empty, industrial little road. and pull up to a red building with a sign that read "Rochester Curling Club." yes, john took me to learn how to curl, and i couldn't help but bust out laughing for a good five minutes.

deanne wasn't there yet and while we were waiting, john mentioned that it wasn't her boyfriend that was coming. he first said it was a friend of deanne's, but she pulled up by herself. so then he let on that we were waiting for a surprise person. running through the list of possible people in the rochester area, i didn't have a lot of options.

here's a clever moment on john's part, by the way. i was digging for info and asked him if he knew what the mystery person drove and he knew this person wasn't already in the club. turns out he called the mystery person while i thought he was calling deanne. so i was able to deduce that it was a female we were waiting for since i had heard a female voice on the phone.

well, that gave me only one person. my other friend kelly, former residence hall roommate extraordinaire who is now teaching in the rochester/geneseo area. asked him point blank, but he sort of hedged it. but lo and behold, she pulled up and it was indeed kelly.

so this club was having an open house. we watched a little video explaining the rules of curling and then we got to go out on the ice and actually do it. it was so freaking hilarious and i have new respect for those people because it is not easy. sweeping, in particular, took way more muscle than any of the three of us girls had. and the curlers were super friendly and nice. plus they have a bar when you come in from the ice. which explains the olympic beer guts. you can keep your beer belly as long as you have some balance and major arm strength.

and in the end the dog was fine since mike was home most of that time, my school work will hopefully get done tomorrow, and we had Quizno's for dinner that we picked up on our way back.

Oh! I am so excited for you that you got to see Kelly! What a nice surprise. I am (was) planning a trip to Virginia to see (among other people) Kathleen. However, that may not be happening due to some changes in my job (that is for another post). I am also contemplating a trip out to see you and kelly sometime this summer (bringing the older child and leaving the younger at home with the Daddy-man). I am feeling adventurous, I guess.

That is fantastic and hysterical.

How is she? I don't think I have talked to her (email or otherwise) since I saw her this summer. Hmmm... maybe I ought to just email her?
