John had to work today for an open house.  At the time of his departure, Nora and I were in the backyard.  He stuck his head out the back door to say good-by and then left.  I thought briefly for a moment that I hoped he didn't habitually lock the door without realizing it, but dismissed the thought as quickly as it popped into my head.

Fast forward to 20 minutes later.  It was getting to be lunch time so we headed to the back door and lo and behold, it was, indeed, locked.  I saw my neighbor pull in to his driveway about 10 minutes before and I prayed that he hadn't left again when I wasn't looking.  I was pretty sure we had given them a spare key and at the very least, I could have used his phone to try John or my folks since I didn't have my cell phone on me.

Steve was still home, but he wasn't sure which key was ours.  Our fault, I suppose, for not putting it on a key chain for them so I had no idea which one it was.  He gave me two to try.  I was carrying Nora this whole time because I was trying to hurry and she's really getting far too big to be carried for extended periods of time.  Also, I could tell she needed a serious diaper change and I, being at the beginning of my cycle, was dangerously close to being leaky, as well.  Awesomeness.

So I try both the keys Steve gave me and neither worked.  I hauled Nora back over there.  He had one more for me to try.  I thought this might be it because it came from Valu, where I'm pretty sure that's where we made our spares.  I hauled Nora back to our place.  It wasn't working at first and I was really going to be even more upset than I already was, but our front door lock does stick so I kept trying and finally got it to work.  Hauled Nora over one last time to give Steve back the key and hauled her back home to get us both upstairs quickly.

I did call John at that point, but his cell phone was off.  He got an earful on voicemail, though.  It's probably good that I didn't notice the open basement door and that morning's yogurt still sitting out until after I called him or he would have gotten an extra earful.

I really am very lucky that Steve was home just then, by the way, because I don't know too many other people in the neighborhood and I can see myself lugging Nora around randomly knocking on doors looking for a phone to use.  Of course, calling John would have gotten me nowhere since his phone was off, but I could always have hoped that my parents were home at that point.

In any case, from now on, they keys go in my pocket, along with my phone, when I'm outside.  And John may still be getting an earful when he gets home.
