Funerals and early Christmas presents
Nov. 20th, 2006 11:12 pmSo my grandfather's cousin's husband died, the guy who founded the Tops chains of grocery stores (the family still owns at least one apart from the foreign corporates who own the rest of them). Met everyone at the church for the longest funeral mass ever with the longest homily ever, distracting myself by trying to determine just what eastern European country that priest came from. He really sounded like Dracula at times and it was just messing with my head. Onto the cemetary in one of those funeral processions that are a lot of fun to be in, but are horrible to get blocked by when you're in a hurry. And then off to the Niagara Falls Country Club for brunch. Is there a greater invention than brunch? I think not. But then I'm all for any excuse to eat bacon.
Stopped by NU for a rare visit to John's office since I was in town and he was surprisingly not too busy for a change. Then booked home to check e-mail and freaked out when I remembered I still hadn't picked up something for Mike for Plane Day. Plane Day is our family holiday commemorating the day we got Mike at JFK airport from his flight from Korea and took the little punk home at the fine age of 4 1/2 months. I really tried to get a gas card, but the kid working was new and by himself and had no clue what he was doing. I tried a gift certificate from Mike's favorite pizza place, but the manager was too busy making subs to do it for me at that moment. So I wound up giving him 20 bucks. Meh, he appreciates money more than anything anyway, but I hate doing that with him.
Anyhoo. Since Julie will not be up for Christmas, I had her and Andy's presents all set. I insisted that she open the Lance Diamond Christmas cd. After all, waiting until Christmas to get a cool Christmas cd seems like a waste of the season, and I also didn't want to risk her going to get it herself while she's in town. I did point out that the other present is very cool and I swear I was not fishing to open my own presents. I know her stance on opening presents early and had already mentally prepared myself to not get them for another month. Honest. Perhaps this not knowing the baby's gender thing is building patience, but I was really okay with waiting. So I would like to state for the record that I did not have to twist Julie's arm at all before she agreed to let us open the presents (Mom may have twisted a little, but I had no part of that).
I think all were pleased. I particularly love the hippo for the baby (um, I mean the Squishy, as Julie now refers to it). Around when I lived in Vermont, I bought anyone that was having a baby one of these super soft Ty stuffed animals, and when I ran out of babies, I finally just bought one for myself. It's not so soft anymore after much loving and numerous trips through the washer, so I'm super happy to have a new one for the baby. We got home and I lit my new candle and placed Tubby the Hippo (the name he came with) on my belly while I read and watched TV so he could get a head start on getting acquainted with the Squishy. I promise not to wear him out before April.
