this will be a repeat of some of sheila's entry, but for those that don't happen to read hers, i gotta document the Lowest of the Low show. oddly, no one was really in the stage area when we got there for the end of the second opening band, so sheila and i got right up front and center, leaning on the stage, trying to make sure the cords didn't fall off and get unplugged (we had to make a rescue twice). the waitresses were scary. one had some major middle-aged spreading going on, amplified by her severely tapered jeans. the other had on not a half shirt, but more of a quarter shirt, if that, and was disturbingly skinny. there was an 8-year-old boy up front, too, who will play a part later.
the show was fabulous and the audience was rather entertaining in its own right. there were the underage drunk sorority girl types next to us who were throwing themselves at the band, almost literally. when ron hawkins went to shake their outstretched hands after one song, they nearly pulled him and the mike stand over, right on top of me and sheila. the girl behind us pointed out that we could take them if need be. good to know. i really wanted to take out the girl wearing huge pearls. pearls? at the Low? these are jeans and t-shirt wearing hockey player types. i felt overdressed wearing a nice long sleeve shirt with my jeans, for crying out loud.
then there were the newlyweds. this guy runs up screaming to ron hawkins that they just go married and his wife is a huge fan and has all their cds. the wife looked embarrassed. ron commented that he hoped he wore a tux and not the "fuck you you fuckin' fucks" t-shirt he currently had on. married guy also became a music coach when the band decided to pull the 8-year-old, kenny, onto the stage and give him a couple of tambourines. it was very nice that married guy spent the rest of the show letting kenny know when to do something with his instruments, but the guy had no rhythm.
the highlight for me, personally, was the surprise song. we could see the set list at ron's feet so i was a little down that there was no "Subversives" or "Black Monday" or even "Henry Needs a New Pair of Shoes," but that one i wasn't expecting at all. however, they referenced earlier in the show how it was Black Friday (retail term for the day after Thanksgiving because of all the shopping), and when ron and the harmonica guy came out for the second encore, they announced that the next song was in honor of Black Friday, and then played "Black Monday." ah, satisfaction for me.
now i'm tired, should really be getting ready for jackie's wedding, but i'm happy.
